Sustainability

At Reethi Faru, sustainability is not just a philosophy — it’s a way of life. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Maldives, the resort is deeply committed to preserving its natural environment for generations to come. From restoring coral reefs to embracing clean energy, here’s a closer look at some of the resort’s leading eco-initiatives that make your stay not just unforgettable, but also environmentally responsible.

Coral Propagation: Restoring Marine Life, One Fragment at a Time

Marine conservation is at the heart of Reethi Faru’s environmental mission. One of the resort’s standout initiatives is coral propagation — a project designed to restore damaged reefs by growing and transplanting coral fragments. These vibrant underwater gardens provide essential habitats for marine life and support the broader goal of protecting marine biodiversity in the region.

Hydroponic Garden: Farm-to-Table, Island Style

Fresh veggies and herbs like cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and basil are grown in our on-site hydroponic garden—without soil, pesticides, or waste. We also harvest island-grown fruits like bananas and coconuts.

Solar Energy: Powering Paradise Sustainably

With 3,602 photovoltaic cells generating over 1 megawatt-hour of electricity, Reethi Faru harnesses solar energy to power much of its daily operations. This major renewable energy initiative significantly reduces the resort’s reliance on fossil fuels, proving that sustainability and luxury can thrive side by side.

Olive Ridley Project: Protecting Sea Turtles

We support sea turtle conservation by tracking nesting activity and identifying turtles through guest-shared photos, helping researchers monitor these vulnerable species.

Manta Trust Partnership: Citizen Science with a Splash

In collaboration with the Manta Trust, Reethi Faru runs the Manta ID Project. Guests are invited to capture and share images of manta rays, contributing to a global identification database. This helps researchers track individual mantas and gain insights into their behavior and movements, turning every snorkeling trip into an opportunity to protect marine life.

Reverse Osmosis Plant: Clean Water, Sustainably Sourced

Our RO plant produces 200 tons of fresh water daily from seawater, ensuring clean drinking water without harming the environment.

Mushroom Farming: A Small but Mighty Step Towards Self-Sufficiency

With a temperature-controlled setup, Reethi Faru grows three varieties of oyster mushrooms on-site. Harvested monthly, this in-house farm supports the resort’s sustainable food initiatives and reduces dependence on imported produce. Future plans aim to diversify the types of mushrooms cultivated.

Waste Management & Biogas: Closing the Loop

Food waste is converted into biogas for cooking in staff kitchens. We recycle glass, avoid single-use plastics, and responsibly dispose of necessary plastic through our partnership with Parley for the Oceans.

Parley for the Oceans: Transforming Plastic into Purpose

As a proud partner of Parley for the Oceans, Reethi Faru actively contributes to their A.I.R. (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign) mission. Segregated plastic waste is sent for recycling and repurposed into products like sportswear, giving harmful waste a second life and helping to combat plastic pollution.

Reethi Faru Resort welcomes feedback from our guests, community and staff about the work we are doing to improve our environmental and social impacts, including suggestions about how we can improve. Please email your comments or ideas to [email protected].
